Self-care starts with your attitude

With all the hustle and bustle in today’s super fast moving world, taking care of yourself, more often than not, seems to be an indulgence, a special treat, a reward for having achieved something special, having hit a target or, on the opposite side of the spectrum, reached a level of burn out, a point where it becomes a necessity to keep you grounded. It does not need to get that far!

With many definitions trying to fully explain the meaning of self-care, ranging from healthcare and disease prevention, to hygiene, nutrition and meditation, empowerment and aspects that improve and define our quality of life, it becomes impossible to see self-care as a single concept, or focus area, or even as something that we practice alone.

To us, this definition comes close to what we envision: "Self-care is one’s action around our physical, emotional, relational, perhaps professional, educational, and, for some people, spiritual well-being that reflects the way that we take care of ourselves on the most fundamental levels," Helen L. Coons, PhD.

Self-care, then, is not an indulgence, it is what we practice in our daily life, self-care is made of the small actions before and after we get out of bed, it lies in every little small thing we do. A high-quality, promising treatment or product may make you feel good, but it is worthless (meaning that it won’t impact your life!) if you don’t follow a few basics.

It doesn’t matter how trendy and amazing your sneakers are if you don’t go for that run, and it becomes irrelevant how luxurious your bed or how high the thread count of your bedsheets are if you don’t get enough hours of sleep. It also doesn’t matter how natural and rich your face cream is, if you constantly eat unhealthy greasy foods. The point is, we are all lured into thinking that by buying certain products or services, our life automatically gets better. The often harder to digest truth is – it gets better because of you and your actions, in the first place. The assets are an add-on, they allow you to perform better, to improve your experience and take it to the next level. The keywords to self-care are discipline, commitment, self-love and self-respect.
